Have you seen Guidepost's new All Creatures magazine? If you love--or ever have been loved by--a dog, cat or other special creature, you'll want to read this magazine. And this month, I'm especially honored that my dogs Kelly and Ike are featured on the cover (July/August issue). Here's how it happened. A little more than 3 months ago we were preparing to say goodbye to Kelly. She was 16 years old, and had been suffering from CCD (Canine Cognitive Disorder) for quite some time. I'd written a story for All Creatures about how our 10 year old golden retriever, Ike, became her therapy dog and helped her navigate through this illness. Even more touching was that Kelly had always been the bossy one, but Ike never held it against her. He gently guided her when all her senses and cognitive functions failed. A wonderful magazine photographer came and took photos of Kelly and Ike together. Then, 5 days later, Ike unexpectedly passed away. He had hemangiosarcoma. A mass on h
Today is a very special day! It's not often that we are able to know the exact date of birth of our rescue dogs, but Ike happened to come to us with his veterinary records when we adopted him two years ago. He's 9 years old today (although all last year I thought he was already 9! Even with records, I get mixed up!) Happy Birthday Ike! P.S. There is still time to enter to win a free Petzi pet cam that has video, sound, and allows you to launch treats to your pet from your phone!
When walking Pete and Ernest, we prefer to use harnesses. But there are so many different types, how do we know the best for our dogs? We once adopted an older dog who walked perfectly on a collar and leash, never pulled and was just as easy as pie...But he was the only easy one! The rest have been a challenge. Even sweet, gentle Ernest is a strong puller. We started using a harness with a front attachment, and found that we were much better able to handle the pulling. We also discovered that there are many different harnesses out there. So that's why we were excited when Julius-K9 , one of the largest manufacturer of dog equipment in Europe, sent us some of their harnesses and other goodies to review. It didn't take me more than a moment to discover the excellent quality and care that was put into the designing and testing of these products. After consulting with the Julius-K9 representative and reading some of their posts, I've become more aware of the proper measuri
