Mike and Ike--Am I Worthy?

Image
I'd like to introduce you to a very special member of our pack, my husband Mike. He's agreed to join in and share his thoughts on dogs with his own feature, Mike and Ike. Please welcome Mike in his debut post. Am I Worthy? Guest Post by Mike Frezon Actually, I love Ike.   Most of you folks here already know that.   Peg and I have two dogs: our little spaniel mix, Kelly…and Ike. She blogs about them (and sometimes me) all the time. But now that she has asked me to occasionally contribute an entry here, I thought I should tell you a little bit about myself and my dogs.  My first dog was a beagle/bassett mix that wandered up to the door of our camp in the Adirondack Mountains. We named her Cleo after a talking basset hound featured on an old 1950s TV show (A sitcom called The People's Choice . Doubtful too many of you will remember it!)    Then, over our years together, Peg and I got our Dalmatian, Schuyler (just before we got married), Hudson our yellow Labrador Retrieve

Small bites for small pups, and Taste of the Wild #giveaway

Image
Do you have a small breed dog? My dog Ike is large, and Kelly is medium. What works for Ike doesn't always work for Kelly. Kelly uses a collar for walks, but Ike does better with a harness. Kelly loves stuffie toys, while Ike prefers tennis balls. Kelly's bed is small, while Ike's is larger. Okay, they don't always get that one right. And then there's food. You want to choose the right food for your particular dog. And if you have a small dog, you wouldn't choose the same food as you do for a dog like, say, Ike. So what do you consider when choosing a food for your small breed dog? 1. Kibble size – Kibble size is one of the most common differences between small breed and regular pet foods. Small dogs have smaller mouths and often have trouble eating a larger kibble. 2. Protein and fat – Small dogs require extra nutrients to meet their needs, it’s important to choose a small breed dog food that has higher levels of protein and fat than ordinary dog food. 3. Ingr

From Wags to Riches celebrates a man who cares about animals

Image
When a reality show takes a look at real people, making positive efforts, especially when it involves animals, I'm there. I love to see people who really care about the welfare of animals highlighted. That's especially true of this TV series about Bill Berloni . I met Bill when I helped him bring his story to Guideposts magazine. He had rescued a scruffy shelter dog, and trained the dog to become the canine star of Broadway's Annie . But Bill Berloni 's story is so much more. Because he really cares about dogs. Now an award-winning theatrical animal trainer, the dogs Bill works with come to live with him on his farm in Connecticut. It's at this farm that the show, From Wags to Riches, is filmed. It follows Bill, along with his wife and daughter, and the house and barn full of dogs, a llama, a donkey and more! From Wags to Riches premiered on Discovery Family Channel August 6. There have been four episodes so far. I'm not sure if there are more planned. In last T

Wordless Wednesday--Shake it Off

Image
When a dog comes out of the lake or ocean, (or even the bathtub!) what does he do but give a good, hard shake to send that water flying and get himself feeling in shipshape again. We can learn a lot from our dogs. If something is upsetting you today, a hurt prickling at you, a worry niggling at you, and you've done what you can to remedy things---just shake it off. Some things you can't change. And others aren't worth stewing over.  So be like a dog and shake it off! Join Blog Paws Wordless Wednesday Blog Hop.
